Rotary Club of Labasa

1. Project Background

Education First Trust in 2014 identified there was a huge problem with literacy particularly English language and numeracy in low decile and many rural schools in Fiji. It was accepted that students lacked teaching aid that may assist in improving their understanding of English language. It was recognised that Rotary Usborne Illustrated English Dictionary was an ideal tool to assist with English learning

Following approach to Rotary Club of Auckland Harbourside it was decided to embark on a joint project to have the dictionaries available to students in low decile schools.

In 2015 first distribution was undertaken covering 22 schools and 456 students in Lautoka Fiji

In 2016 second distribution was undertaken covering 40 schools and 509 students in Ba and Tavua area.

2.      2017 Project  Description

5.      Impact of this Project

This is third distribution total students benefiting from this project so far 2565 students.

We have re visited schools in Lautoka to get some perspective of impact of this project that revealed students were using the dictionaries and teachers have noticed a gradual improvement in literacy.

The students targeted would have never been able to afford a dictionary, it is not only students nearly all schools library had no dictionaries available as reference books. We have since also handed a copy of the dictionary to many schools.

The Head teachers were extremely grateful for this gift of learning that they believe will assist in uplifting students English language skills.

As we now have three years student data we propose to undertake a review on effectiveness and sustainability of this project. A discussion on this has been held with University of Fiji to assist with such review no timetable has been established on commencement of this review but we are pursuing this to get off this ground as soon as practicable.

In summary this is a very satisfying experience to see smiles on student faces receiving their own Dictionaries a gift of Learning and teacher expressing their gratitude of our endeavors.
